Yet, they must endure the campaign long enough to release the DawnKing’and the salvation he offers’into a divided land. To prevail, each must learn that sometimes victory comes only through surrender.

General Overview:

I really don’t know why, but throughout the book I couldn’t stop comparing the flow of the book with that of a river- a river that flows calmly at its own pace. The book was a pleasant read. Although being a part of a series, it gave a sense of completion at the end. The fantasy world was so ethereal, so beautiful, so mesmerizing. Inspite of few points which created obstacles in making me get connected with the book, I was totally in awe with the world-building.  After a very long time, I read a book which transported me completely to another world.

The story is about a very young girl- Shae, who has been brought up in a very sheltered environment. She leaves her abode for the first time in her life, when she is called by her High Queen. Facing and escaping attacks on her life, she reaches the palace. There she comes across the most important truth of her life and is given a responsibility which only she can shoulder.  Fulfilling her responsibility can help saving Faeraven. In order to save her kingdom, she begins a treacherous journey to unknown lands with Kai and his group to release the DawnKing.

The main casts were well developed.

Shae is shown as a naive girl with no experience of the world beyond her home. As she comes out of her comfort zone and interacts with people around her, one can observe her metamorphosis from a shy, frail girl to courageous, determined and focused person. It doesn’t happen in a day or in a blink of an eye. The pace of transition is such that you genuinely feel it happening within the pages.

Kai is a wonderful character. Bound by duty and honour, he is a very righteous man. For him, his duty is foremost.  He is a man who is ruled by his mind. As I read, I could feel the turmoil in him when his heart takes over. He doesn’t want to accept the change of feelings but he is losing his battle there. I liked the way the author dealt with his part of the story.

The other characters were also given depth in their personality.

The best part of the whole book was its descriptive writing. It was so picturesque. Each and every scene was so meticulously described that I could visualize it in my mind as I read. The author has outdone herself in this.

The events in the story took place at very apt intervals. It helped to prevent slackness. I also liked the various creatures involved. They were so mystical and so different from each other.

The book did not end at a cliff hanger. Though there is a future story, but for this book, the completion was properly done. I liked this particular piece. As a reader, I felt a sense of satisfaction after reading. I am eagerly waiting for the next book in the series, but that doesn’t mean that I have to chew my nails off for it.

The terms and the names were too out-worldly. I understand that it was a fantasy novel but such difficult terms and names hindered my bonding with the book.

The other thing which I felt was that in some places there were few missing links. In some parts of the book, I felt a need of a background story. In its absence, the story couldn’t be enjoyed thoroughly as I wanted to. For instance, I would like to know the story or reason behind Kai becoming the guardian.

I was totally awed by the world created by the author. Other than very difficult and unheard terms, the book was quite enjoyable. This book is recommended to those who love fantasy worlds and journey of self-discovery.

Review of Shadow Bloodlines

Title: Shadow Bloodlines #1

Author: Andrea R Cooper

Series: Shadow Bloodlines

Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy

Source: Received a copy from YABoundTours in exchange of honest review

I didn’t know I was a shifter until the hunters found me…

When eighteen-year-old Beth receives a mysterious text from her deadbeat father not to go to school, why should she listen to him now? But when strangers show up in one of her classes hunting her and wanting her dead, she must uncover the truth about why and what exactly she is.

Amar has been entombed in stone for centuries. He longs for freedom and only the blood of a shifter will set him free. After centuries frozen as a gargoyle, he doubts there are many of his kind left. Yet, Beth rescues him and more than his responsibility to protect her fills him. He must choose between duty and love.

Before the race of hunters capture her, Beth and Amar must find her shifter dad in order to save all their lives.

General Overview:

Imagine a life with all the normal routines, happenings, and friends – a simple normal world… and now imagine someone turning a page of that life and Swoosh!!! It’s bizarre fantasy world and there is nothing normal in your life anymore….

This is what I felt reading the book… and mind you, I totally loved it 🙂

The Plot:

The book is based in today’s world with the mythical creatures all around. The protagonist Beth is attacked by strangers who reveal the secret of her being a shifter. She is saved by Amar, an angel of sorts, who was a stone gargoyle for centuries until Beth frees him. Together they embark upon a journey to find the answers from Beth’s long-lost father. They are chased by the attackers at every point throughout the journey. During this process, Beth also tries to come in terms with this major upheaval in her life.

The cast mainly consists of youngsters, who are still inexperienced in life. I am including Amar as well. Though, technically he is ancient, but experience-wise he is just like any other young guy. When adverse situations fall upon them, they find themselves dealing with consequences of their own hasty decisions and impulsive actions. On the advantageous side, due to their young age they are able to think quickly and slip out of sticky places.

I liked Beth’s character. From the very beginning, the author has shown Beth having a flawed personality. She misunderstands things; she is impatient; she doesn’t heed advices; she loses her patience quite often. But it is understandable as she is suddenly plunked into a world which is absolutely unknown to her. She isn’t even allowed to get a breather and her whole world comes crashing down. There is no elder whom she could turn to. In these circumstances she is bound to be confused and make mistakes.

I really liked the abilities which Beth possesses as a shifter. To me, they were quite different.

It is rare when the story-line deals with the ones who are on the weaker side. Most of the time, in paranormal stories, the main characters are the powerful ones. Generally, they rule or look after that particular area or region and hunt down the wrongdoers. But here the scenario was quite the opposite. This particular side of the story struck me the most. From the very initial stage it has been clearly implied that Beth and Amar are being chased. And the chase is not for their capture but for hunting them down. Shifters are the ones who are into hiding. They are afraid; most of them live nomadic lives; they keep changing their appearances to remain hidden. All these instances give a message, loud and clear, that shifters are the victims.

I really liked this angle of the story.

There were no such wow incidents. The story was smooth but it lacked a certain amount of thrill. The reason for such a thought is that the plot is based on chase and search of Beth’s father. I wished for more of exciting and thrilling adventures.

Amar disappointed me a little [a very tiny-miny little]. Not that his character had any flaws. On the contrary, he was very likeable. It’s only that, he took himself to the task of being a protector of Beth but most of the time it was she who helped him out of the mess. The only benefit of doubt which I can give Amar is that he wasn’t used to this world and was taking time to get adjusted to it. I have inkling that his role will be more important in the sequel…. For which I wait eagerly.

“Aria stop being so stupid!” he hissed at her as though he had had enough, “You are going to do your treatments and you are going to get better.”

“No I am not Ethan! Its over! Just leave me alone!” She gritted her teeth against the tears that threatened to stream down her face.

Ethan dropped down on the floor beside the bed then knelt in front of her. He grabbed hold of her hand and held it so tightly that Aria was forced to feel it.

“Aria, I need you to stop this,” he told her, staring her in the eye as though he was trying to push the words into her mind, “I need you to get better because I need you. Aria I love you and I have always loved you. I can’t imagine my life without you.” Tears started flowing. She saw the seriousness on his face and it made her weep. There was nothing she could do but cry.

“Ethan, please leave me alone,” she wept, “I can’t do this.” Her heart pounded as she saw the bitterness on his face. She wanted nothing more than to throw herself into his arms and take that look off his face but she couldn’t take him down with her. There was no way she could let him give up his dreams to take care of her for the rest of his life. She had to be harsh to be kind.

Ethan looked down at their hands and she was sure that he was going to cry. She wanted to tell him not to. She wanted to tell him that she loved him too and that she wanted to fight for him but she couldn’t hold him down.

“Dad wants me to go on a business trip to New York for a few weeks. I told him that I couldn’t because you need me but I guess I should go and leave you alone,” He sighed as he stood up, dropping her hand from his own”…

… The front door of the house clicked shut as Ethan left the room. She wanted to get up, run to him and tell him not to go but it was never going to happen. Her heart pounded as she realized she had broken her own heart. There was nothing she could do but let him leave. From the way he had spoken he made it sound as if he wasn’t going to come back. The thought of never seeing him again made her feel sick. She wanted to shout out to him and call him back but she couldn’t even manage to open her mouth.

O'Donnell, Laurel- A Knight with Grace (final)

Title: A Knight with Grace

Author: Laurel O’Donnell

Genre: Historical Romance

As Emily slept beside her, Grace stared at the moon through the shutters in her room. She was having difficulty falling asleep. Could she have been so wrong? Had her prayers been answered all along in William? He was honorable, noble, and so very handsome. His blue eyes weakened her knees. His kiss sent her world spinning, made her entire body come to life. She had to admit that she was falling in love with him.

Could the story of him murdering the archbishop be wrong? King Henry had not punished him, nor taken any of his lands away, so perhaps what William said was true. That the king had ordered the archbishop’s killing. Or was she wrong and she was justifying what he did because she was starting to have feelings for him?

She turned over onto her back with a sigh. This line of thinking certainly wasn’t going to get her any sleep. She saw a shadow move in her room. At first, she thought it was Anna, the servant that had been assigned to her. She glanced at Emily. But Emily hadn’t moved. Grace sat up, trying to see into the room. Perhaps she had imagined it.

“Emily?” Grace whispered and reached out to shake her. Her fingers touched something wet. Confused, she stared at it for a moment. Then a shadow rose to life beside her, separating from the rest.

Instinctively, Grace pulled away from it. She slipped over the wetness near Emily and they both slid from the bed into a pile on the floor. Grace turned over in time to see the shadow on the bed. “Run, Emily!”

Someone was in her room! She was certain this time. She turned onto her hands and knees and crawled toward the door, calling, “William!” She managed to get her feet beneath her, but they caught in her nightdress and she fell onto her knee. She heard a whoosh over head. She tumbled forward and fell onto her back as the shadow flew over her head. The moonlight glinted on a metal blade whizzing past her.

     She screamed.

Wasn’t the excerpt so thrilling??? I am sure you want to know more.. Check out the blurb below.

Excommunicated and outcast for a horrible crime in his past, Sir William de Tracy searches for forgiveness. Marriage has never crossed his mind until Lord Willoughby commissions him to retrieve his fleeing daughter and honor the dying wish of his father by marrying Grace.

The Happiness Tag

I stumbled upon this tag at the orang-utan librarian… and liked it immensely. Go check out her blog, it’s amazing – I totally love her blog.

With the monsoon season all around me and awesome weather every day, it was hard to NOT do this tag. I feel happy already. So let me get on to it-

First part of the TAG:

List five things that make you happy:

They don’t listen, create ruckus all around, love to have arguments [it’s ‘discussion’ in their dictionary], fight with each other every other minute, make me run after them, dump their Whys, Whats, Wheres, Whens all over me and have endless demands… But when they come and hug me till I topple down from my seat… everything becomes BLISS!!! These two angelic devils make me HAPPIEST!!!.

Why am I having this blog for then??? 😉

I love all kinds of music which either makes me groove or relaxes me. If I love that music, it doesn’t matter to me whether I am able to understand the lyrics or not. 🙂

For a person belonging to the regions in the foothills of Himalayas – Nature or natural beauty is part of life. For me, it brings a sense of peace and happiness all over. My thoughts come alive while walking on a grassy knoll or under the shady tress with birds chirping and dewdrops falling. To be in that silence is divine. Any lush green area, indeed makes me happy.

I love doing small paper crafts like origami, paper jewellery, quilling, loom bands. Making things, through these arts, acts like a stress buster for me. It certainly makes me very happy.

Second part of the TAG:

List five songs that you love:

I am a lover of music bands mostly. Most of my favourite songs belong to the 70s. I regret not being born in the 70s which is considered the peak time of music all over the world 😉

Every song listed here is dear to me for different reasons and when I listen to them- they make me genuinely happy.

‘WORDS’ – Boyzone

Have you ever fallen in love with a voice? I did. When I heard this song for the first time, I just skipped a heartbeat and then I was totally mesmerized… and am till date. 🙂

‘WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD’ – Louis Armstrong

The song’s lyrics and the depth in the voice just draws me to it.

TOP OF THE WORLD – Carpenters

This song is special to me because my younger one smiled for the first time while I was playing this song.

This is one of my favourite groups ever. I love mostly all the songs of theirs. But this tops them all. This song brings me hope and makes me feel that world is a beautiful place to live in.

PERFECT – One Direction

There is no specific reason. When I listen to this song, it just brings a smile to my face and lifts my spirits up. Maybe it’s the voice, maybe the lyrics… Whatever it is, it just works perfect for me 😀

I tag all my readers. It is definitely a fun tag to do and I would definitely love to read about things that make you happy… Will be waiting eagerly 🙂

First on Friday – The Darkest Torment

The beginning of weekends brings along fresh burst of energy. People plan to utilize their weekends in the way they love the most. What more do you expect from a voracious reader than to start a new book. And that’s the point of my bookish meme.

Reaching out, I coax him to hand over whatever he’s concealing. He wears a playful smile that slips away when he sees my arm. Noticing that I’ve extended my bandaged wrist, I move it away, but Dev gingerly grabs my hand and brings it closer.

“No! I don’t think you should do that,” I say as he begins to unwrap the bandage, remembering what the doctor told me about exposing the burn too much. He holds me steady.

“Do you want this to heal?”

“It’s a simple question. Do you want this to heal?” He nods to my bandage.

“Of course I do.” I frown. “I want nothing more than for it to heal so I don’t have to wear this stupid thing.”

As soon as I finish speaking, the coolness of his hands seep through the bandage and reaches my skin. The sensation startles me, and I try tugging my arm back, but Dev laces his long fingers with mine, holding me in place. After a beat he continues to unwrap the dressing, my newly exposed skin feeling sensitive in the fresh air.

My breath catches at what I’m pretty sure shouldn’t be there. The puffy, raw skin I was used to seeing circle my wrist is now nothing more than an ugly scab. How did it heal so fast? I slowly turn my hand over, lightly touching it to make sure it’s real.

“The mind is a powerful thing, Molly. Always remember that.”

He looks so much The-Dreamer_poster-2bolder in this moment…his eyes seem to hold centuries of secrets. I wonder what his age actually is. I thought he was just a few years older than myself, but now that I see his face smoothly lit by the night sky, empty of anything but a gentle expression, he possesses something ancient.

“What type of jewelry were you wearing?” He brings me back to the present by lightly stroking the sensitive part of my wrist.

I hold in a shiver. “Um, a charm bracelet. It was a gift for my birthday.”

He removes his hand. “Who gave it to you?”

I hesitate. Jared obviously gave it to me, but do I just say that? Then Dev will ask who Jared is, and for some reason I’m reluctant to admit what he might be to me.

I tuck my hair behind my ear. “A guy.”

Dev searches my eyes as I try to read how my answer might have affected him—deep down, I know I desperately want it to.

Dear Lord! What is wrong with me? This guy isn’t even real! And isn’t this the same man who made me furious earlier tonight?

“What do you do when you’re awake?”

“What do you do when you’re not here? Do you have a job?”

“Uh, yes I have a job…” I hesitate, confused by the change of subject. “It’s all very boring though.”

He pushes me to explain, asking question after question about my mundane existence.

Slowly, his voice begins to fade and sound distant. I dig my fingers into the grass in an attempt to hold myself here, and Dev flashes me a sad smile.

“I’m waking up, aren’t I?”

“But I wanted to ask you questions now.”

He reaches out, grazing my cheek with his hand. The sensation of his touch is barely there as my body has begun to recognize another surrounding. “There will be plenty of time for that.” His voice is buried under layers, and my heart trembles that there might not be. Will I dream of this again?

With that last thought, light fills my vision, and my eyes flutter open to early morning rays stretching into my window, laying their gentle warmth on my skin like a touch I long to remember.
