PEEK – A – BOO:

I didn’t know I was a shifter until the hunters found me…

When eighteen-year-old Beth receives a mysterious text from her deadbeat father not to go to school, why should she listen to him now? But when strangers show up in one of her classes hunting her and wanting her dead, she must uncover the truth about why and what exactly she is.

Amar has been entombed in stone for centuries. He longs for freedom and only the blood of a shifter will set him free. After centuries frozen as a gargoyle, he doubts there are many of his kind left. Yet, Beth rescues him and more than his responsibility to protect her fills him. He must choose between duty and love.

Before the race of hunters capture her, Beth and Amar must find her shifter dad in order to save all their lives.

MY TAKE ON SHADOW BLOODLINES:

General Overview:

Imagine a life with all the normal routines, happenings, and friends – a simple normal world… and now imagine someone turning a page of that life and Swoosh!!! It’s bizarre fantasy world and there is nothing normal in your life anymore….

This is what I felt reading the book… and mind you, I totally loved it 🙂

The Plot:

The book is based in today’s world with the mythical creatures all around. The protagonist Beth is attacked by strangers who reveal the secret of her being a shifter. She is saved by Amar, an angel of sorts, who was a stone gargoyle for centuries until Beth frees him. Together they embark upon a journey to find the answers from Beth’s long-lost father. They are chased by the attackers at every point throughout the journey. During this process, Beth also tries to come in terms with this major upheaval in her life.

Cast:

The cast mainly consists of youngsters, who are still inexperienced in life. I am including Amar as well. Though, technically he is ancient, but experience-wise he is just like any other young guy. When adverse situations fall upon them, they find themselves dealing with consequences of their own hasty decisions and impulsive actions. On the advantageous side, due to their young age they are able to think quickly and slip out of sticky places.

Pros:

I liked Beth’s character. From the very beginning, the author has shown Beth having a flawed personality. She misunderstands things; she is impatient; she doesn’t heed advices; she loses her patience quite often. But it is understandable as she is suddenly plunked into a world which is absolutely unknown to her. She isn’t even allowed to get a breather and her whole world comes crashing down. There is no elder whom she could turn to. In these circumstances she is bound to be confused and make mistakes.

I really liked the abilities which Beth possesses as a shifter. To me, they were quite different.

It is rare when the story-line deals with the ones who are on the weaker side. Most of the time, in paranormal stories, the main characters are the powerful ones. Generally, they rule or look after that particular area or region and hunt down the wrongdoers. But here the scenario was quite the opposite. This particular side of the story struck me the most. From the very initial stage it has been clearly implied that Beth and Amar are being chased. And the chase is not for their capture but for hunting them down. Shifters are the ones who are into hiding. They are afraid; most of them live nomadic lives; they keep changing their appearances to remain hidden. All these instances give a message, loud and clear, that shifters are the victims.

I really liked this angle of the story.

Cons:

There were no such wow incidents. The story was smooth but it lacked a certain amount of thrill. The reason for such a thought is that the plot is based on chase and search of Beth’s father. I wished for more of exciting and thrilling adventures.

Amar disappointed me a little [a very tiny-miny little]. Not that his character had any flaws. On the contrary, he was very likeable. It’s only that, he took himself to the task of being a protector of Beth but most of the time it was she who helped him out of the mess. The only benefit of doubt which I can give Amar is that he wasn’t used to this world and was taking time to get adjusted to it. I have inkling that his role will be more important in the sequel…. For which I wait eagerly.
