Review of Shadow Bloodlines

Title: Shadow Bloodlines #1

Author: Andrea R Cooper

Series: Shadow Bloodlines

Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy

I didn’t know I was a shifter until the hunters found me…

When eighteen-year-old Beth receives a mysterious text from her deadbeat father not to go to school, why should she listen to him now? But when strangers show up in one of her classes hunting her and wanting her dead, she must uncover the truth about why and what exactly she is.

Amar has been entombed in stone for centuries. He longs for freedom and only the blood of a shifter will set him free. After centuries frozen as a gargoyle, he doubts there are many of his kind left. Yet, Beth rescues him and more than his responsibility to protect her fills him. He must choose between duty and love.

Before the race of hunters capture her, Beth and Amar must find her shifter dad in order to save all their lives.

General Overview:

Imagine a life with all the normal routines, happenings, and friends – a simple normal world… and now imagine someone turning a page of that life and Swoosh!!! It’s bizarre fantasy world and there is nothing normal in your life anymore….

This is what I felt reading the book… and mind you, I totally loved it 🙂

The Plot:

The book is based in today’s world with the mythical creatures all around. The protagonist Beth is attacked by strangers who reveal the secret of her being a shifter. She is saved by Amar, an angel of sorts, who was a stone gargoyle for centuries until Beth frees him. Together they embark upon a journey to find the answers from Beth’s long-lost father. They are chased by the attackers at every point throughout the journey. During this process, Beth also tries to come in terms with this major upheaval in her life.

The cast mainly consists of youngsters, who are still inexperienced in life. I am including Amar as well. Though, technically he is ancient, but experience-wise he is just like any other young guy. When adverse situations fall upon them, they find themselves dealing with consequences of their own hasty decisions and impulsive actions. On the advantageous side, due to their young age they are able to think quickly and slip out of sticky places.

I liked Beth’s character. From the very beginning, the author has shown Beth having a flawed personality. She misunderstands things; she is impatient; she doesn’t heed advices; she loses her patience quite often. But it is understandable as she is suddenly plunked into a world which is absolutely unknown to her. She isn’t even allowed to get a breather and her whole world comes crashing down. There is no elder whom she could turn to. In these circumstances she is bound to be confused and make mistakes.

I really liked the abilities which Beth possesses as a shifter. To me, they were quite different.

It is rare when the story-line deals with the ones who are on the weaker side. Most of the time, in paranormal stories, the main characters are the powerful ones. Generally, they rule or look after that particular area or region and hunt down the wrongdoers. But here the scenario was quite the opposite. This particular side of the story struck me the most. From the very initial stage it has been clearly implied that Beth and Amar are being chased. And the chase is not for their capture but for hunting them down. Shifters are the ones who are into hiding. They are afraid; most of them live nomadic lives; they keep changing their appearances to remain hidden. All these instances give a message, loud and clear, that shifters are the victims.

I really liked this angle of the story.

There were no such wow incidents. The story was smooth but it lacked a certain amount of thrill. The reason for such a thought is that the plot is based on chase and search of Beth’s father. I wished for more of exciting and thrilling adventures.

Amar disappointed me a little [a very tiny-miny little]. Not that his character had any flaws. On the contrary, he was very likeable. It’s only that, he took himself to the task of being a protector of Beth but most of the time it was she who helped him out of the mess. The only benefit of doubt which I can give Amar is that he wasn’t used to this world and was taking time to get adjusted to it. I have inkling that his role will be more important in the sequel…. For which I wait eagerly.

Review of Rose Petal Graves

Title: Rose Petal Graves

Author: Olivia Wildenstein

Series: The Lost Clan

Genre: Paranormal/Faeries

Pages: 182

Ancient secrets cannot remain buried forever.

Founded two centuries ago by an aloof and powerful tribe of Gottwa Indians, Rowan was a quiet town, so quiet that I fled after graduation. Staying away was the plan, but Mom died suddenly, so I rushed home.

Dad said she suffered a stroke after she dug up one of the ancient graves in our backyard, which happens to be the town cemetery. Creepy, I know. Creepier still, there was no corpse inside the old coffin, only fresh rose petals.

As we made preparations for Mom’s burial, Cruz, the new medical examiner, arrived. I should have felt relieved, but how could I? He was unnervingly handsome, glowed like a human firefly, and knew absolutely nothing about examining dead bodies.

But, he did know what killed my mother…or rather who.

General Overview:-

‘What! It ended! So soon… I had just started reading it…’ My reaction when I finished this novella.

I don’t think I need to say more about how engrossed I was in it. Though the beginning was slightly creepy, yet the book quickly pulled me into its story-line. The blend of a fine plot, strong characters, good pace brought out a splendid tale.

I was a little apprehensive about the book, as the story started with a death- that too in a house whose backyard is a cemetery! Along with this, the female protagonist- Catori- firmly believes that her mother’s death is a murder. However, my doubts took a backseat as the story progressed into a series of incidents which made me grasp the book till its’ very end.

The novella speeds up with the appearance of a book, which introduces Catori to a world, which she considered as – just a myth. She is surprised when she is able to connect the things written in the book to the happenings around her. Things become more complicated with the arrival of a mysterious Medical Examiner. As Catori unfolds the mysteries hidden long ago, she is made aware of her actual identity. Keeping up with all this, she desperately pursues her search for the reason behind her mother’s death.

The beauty of this novella is that it completely sucks the reader in the whirlwind of events from the very beginning. I was also impressed by the fact that even with such fast changing plots, there was no confusion in understanding the story. Usually with so many events and characters being introduced at such smaller intervals, the reader rereads the previous pages to catch up. But, I couldn’t find a single event when I had to look back to understand it.

Other trait of the book is the creation of a doubtful atmosphere around the female protagonist. She is surrounded by many people among whom some are friends and some foes. The author skilfully provided such evidences that one is just left guessing about the credibility of the characters. At one point of time the character seems like a friend to Catori and in the next completely opposite. The suspense created about the characters intrigued me till I finished reading it.

I think the novella was left at an extremely high note which gave me a feeling of utter frustration and helplessness. It looked more like a hasty ending than a continuing thread for the next book. Totally a cliffhanger, but too high for me to reach 😉

All in all, the novella is very interesting to read. With a touch of Native American Mythology, the book keeps you on edge. The characters are well developed and the reader can easily connect with their mindset.

A Must Read for those who love mix of paranormal and fantasy with a plot full of suspense.

Olivia Wildenstein grew up in New York City, the daughter of a French father with a great sense of humor, and a Swedish mother whom she speaks to at least three times a day. She chose Brown University to complete her undergraduate studies and earned a bachelor’s in comparative literature. After designing jewelry for a few years, Wildenstein traded in her tools for a laptop computer and a very comfortable chair. This line of work made more sense, considering her college degree.

When she’s not writing, she’s psychoanalyzing everyone she meets (Yes. Everyone), eavesdropping on conversations to gather material for her next book, baking up a storm (that she actually eats), going to the gym (because she eats), and attempting not to be late at her children’s school (like she is 4 out of 5 mornings, on good weeks).

Wildenstein lives with her husband and three children in Geneva, Switzerland, where she’s an active member of the writing community.

My breath catches as Dylan’s fingers rub my cheek. I flinch away. His worry for my suffering is too hard to grasp. Could he really know where I fit or who I should be? My pounding heart echoes in my ears. I swallow the sour taste of my pride and bury my anger and vulnerability deep inside. It takes every ounce of my strength to stay still. I’m not sure if I should slap him and make him stop or simply run away with him.

Teaser 4“Cami,” he says. “Look at me.”

I lift my gaze, staring into his eyes. And then a thought hits me like a burning comet falling from the sky. Dylan isn’t trying to rouse the pain in my soul or carry me into a new life. He is showing me options I have that I was never aware of. I don’t have to run forever. I can find my place in the world. My cheeks warm, and my nerves settle.

Yet, his efforts are futile. I would never leave Alana, and that’s why my emotions have gotten out of control. I refuse to live a life without her, even if it makes me an outcast in both worlds.

“You’re beautiful.” Dylan tucks strands of my dark hair behind my ear. “I wish I didn’t have to go.”

“Me too.”My shoulders hunch in disappointment. I knew this moment would come. Dylan has a life to go back to. I should be used to meeting people and never seeing them again, but I’m tired of that. Why can’t I be normal?Teaser 2

“You could come with me.” Dylan cups my face in his hands. “Alana isn’t the only one who can keep you safe.”

“It isn’t possible. This is the only way I can try to be normal. It’s for the best.” I would love to run away from this life, but I can’t trust Dylan. I’ve known him a few hours, and it would be crazy to even consider it. I like him, but I also like chocolate, reading, and not being bothered by demons, too.

“Yeah, for the best,” Dylan mumbles.

I was waiting for this one…After reading so much of Nassir and yet so less, I couldn’t wait to grab this book.

So, you can just imagine my surprise when I turn to the first page and it’s all about Lijuan. I was like… Whoaa!!! What’s this?

Nalini Singh really got me there 🙂

Nassir was the last of ‘The Seven’ who came into the series. His character is truly as the book’s title says… An Enigma. Nalini Singh has done an absolute job in creating such a fascinating character. Nassir is a vampire who is unpredictable, secretive, impulsive, dangerous, lovable, intelligent and much-much more. Basically I find him a bundle of every trait which is considered as opposites. At one moment he wants to eat people and at other, he cuddles like a cub. In a blink of an eye, he jumps from a high rise to a balcony or on the other hand plans out to breach the highest security of any given area. Though introduced as a vampire, he shows signs of someone beyond that.

And to find out about WHO – WHY – WHAT – WHERE – WHEN about Nassir… this book is a must read.

The story is fast paced with continuous change of scenes. Nassir is desperate to find his mate with whom he can be his own self. He finds his would be mate in the refuge, who is quickly whisked away before he can know her better. To find her, he moves across continents to the most dangerous territory… of Lijuan. After rescuing Andromeda, both travel across the world in search of a sleeping Archangel. In turn, they discover the unbreakable bond developing among them.

I loved the character development of Nassir.  His clash within himself of being a human or an animal- has been brought out amazingly. Even with the cruelty behind the formation of Nassir, Nalini has kept his innocence intact. It makes you fall in love with the character more so.

Andromeda is a sure match for Nassir.  Spending her childhood with animals, she understands Nassir like no other. A scholar and warrior having many layers of secrets like Nassir, she evokes feeling of belonging in Nassir.

Nalini also allows us a glimpse of developing bond between Sparkle and Bluebell. Illium’s change is a thing to watch for in upcoming series. Few other characters, like- Xi and Suyin, have been brought into focus in this part. They might become one of the focal points, in turning the story in future.

Will the ‘Cascade’ bring something more horrifying – now, when it’s gaining momentum? Will Raphael and Elena be able to deal with it? What about the Prophecy? Will the world continue to suffer the atrocities of Lijuan? How will the world survive the presence of eleven archangels?

So many questions unanswered.

I wait for the next part eagerly.

Oh God!! Whom am I kidding… I can’t wait at all !!!
